First of all, we've had a bit better and less roller-coastery day than yesterday. We were able to extubate Ben this morning. By the time we did, we were both eager to do so. Once we pulled Ben out of sedation, in order to extubate him, he was extremely agitated with the tube. This caused [...]

A Night in the ICU
After the news from our surgeon last night, Jesse and I were elated! It's amazing the way darkness can try to seduce your thoughts when you have so much at risk. We left Shriners, where we had been waiting, to head across to MCH. We were almost giddy with relief. We ran down and grabbed [...]
Earned my gold today!
K...update. It is 5:30 our time, and I just talked to the surgeon. Ben should be out of the OR in the next hour or so. All the tricky stuff is done - they are just wrapping things up. The surgeon was pleased with how the surgery went. We were able to do both the [...]
Ben’s in surgery
Just a quick note that Ben went into surgery at 8:30 this morning Quebec time. I was able to put him to sleep myself. He continues to amaze us all! His surgery will likely take most of the day. I will do a quick update to this post when he gets out.
Ready for Surgery
This weekend I got to play with my friends here a lot! One of our favourite games is playing hospital. We all take turns playing doctor and we give the babies casts and x-rays and walkers. If the babies are bad, we give them morphine to stop them crying, but it's just a pretend needle. My [...]
If worry was an Olympic Sport
If worry was an Olympic sport, I think I'd bring home the gold. Before you even start reading, I apologize; I have a lot of time on my hands. This is what I think it would look like if worrying was an Olympic sport. ************************************************************************** Announcer Bob: Well it's looking to be a grey day [...]
A Famous Guy
A famous guy came to see me today at lunchtime. He was a hockey player and he is Canadian. I am too. Mom said his name was Brendan Gallagher. He had heard about my leprechaun trap, so I showed him a picture because the real thing got accidentally ripped the other day when I pulled out my [...]
If this was Survivor…
So here we are at our 39th day in the hospital. That means if this were Survivor we'd have a one in three chance of winning a million dollars. Now as I stand before Tribal council (or Ben's growing collection of bears, stuffies, and Courage) I look within and ask myself ...did I outwit, outlast, and [...]
I caught a leprechaun………almost!
Boy - these guys are so tricky. I didn't even know if they had been at my trap. When I put my hand in my trap, I could definitely feel something there. I was very excited. Then I grabbed something and it was a note. It said: Then I found some wrapped presents. This is what [...]
The Gift of Hope
One of the most difficult lessons that I have learned over the past few years was that I can't give hope to someone. It is not up to me to tell someone else that everything will be fine. I really resisted this idea at first, but over time I think I am starting to get [...]
